The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), part of the World Health Organization (WHO),
has announced that it has classified the widely used chemical formaldehyde as carcinogenic to humans.
An IARC source said that 26 scientists from 10 countries evaluated the available evidence on the
carcinogenicity of formaldehyde and the working group, convened by the IARC’s Monographs Programme,
concluded that :
‘formaldehyde is indeed carcinogenic to humans’.
