The benefits of warming the injured at the scene of an accident and then keeping them warm in transit to the hospital
cannot be under stated. Apart from feeling nice and warm patients have been shown to be less fearful, calmer, in
greater comfort and experience less pain. The benefits to A&E, surgical staff and the hospital accountant is even more
marked. It is known that a patient entering theatre with a normothermic core body temperature will have a significantly
better likelihood of recovery - blood clots better so there are fewer units transfused, the body can fight infections
better so antibiotics are used less and ultimately the patient is discharged from hospital sooner so freeing up bed space.
Purely financial savings per patient were estimated in 2004 and found to be:
£4,436 for surgical wound infection after intermediate/major surgery
£1,092 for surgical wound infection after intermediate/major surgery
£1,223 to treat a pressure ulcer caused during major surgery
£316 per extra day a patient stays in hospital
So there really is some serious money to be saved, whilst giving patients a better deal. A win-win situation!
