Inadvertent hypothermia is of such significance that hospitals worldwide are looking at way to prevent this
avoidable condition. No one piece of equipment has the total answer - is is a combination of different methods
that is the answer - warm fluids at all times, and warm the patient in the most appropriate way.

In most instances the patient should have a core temperature above 36C with children
and the elderly most likely not to achieve this so pre-warming should be considered in
most instances before induction of anaesthesia.

It is known that core body temperature can drop by as much as 1.5C in the first half hour
of anaesthesia so intra operative warming is essential.

Similarly, the effects of withdrawal from anaesthesia can cause painful shivering and this
can be alleviated by keeping the patient warm in theatre recovery and also on the ward.

Other beneficial methods to help prevent intra operative hypothermia are to warm all fluids
before use. Bottles of fluid should be kept warm in fluid warming cabinets.

Blood and fluids that are to be infused into the patient should also be warmed using rapid warmers.
