Patient Warming Equipment
PATIENT WARMING?
NICE Guidelines say patient warming is essential
NICE GUIDELINES
The latest guidelines from NICE are in favour of using IV fluid warming in conjunction with heated blankets pre, during and
immediately post surgery. If the period of anaesthesia lasts more than 30 minutes the patient must (in almost all
instances) be actively warmed to prevent complications from hypothermia.
WE CAN HELP
We supply equipment that helps theatre staff meet these criteria - blood warmers, fluid warmers and heated blankets that
when combined together make it so much easier to maintain optimum patient temperature management, give maximum
patient comfort and help prevent perioperative hypothermia under all circumstances.
RESEARCH
Research has shown beyond all doubt that conductive heated blankets manufactured by Geratherm can transfer almost
twice as much warmth to your patient. The reason is a combination of factors - temperature differential, contact
area, etc. A rigid blanket is not going to have much surface area in contact with the patient and we all know that warm air
is far less effective at transferring heat compared with a more solid heating blanket. Using the Geratherm system it is
commonplace to have a core body temperature of around 36.5C at the end of a lengthy procedure, and now you know why!

NO MORE HOT AIR!
Hot air blower systems were developed around 20 years ago. At the time this was modern technology but technology has
now moved on and there are now far better methods of avoiding intra-operative hypothermia and maintaining normothermy.
It has now been proven beyond any doubt that conductive warming is far more effective than the old fashioned forced air
warming systems.
DIRTY
In addition these new blankets are far safer because they do not interfere with the sterile laminar airflow systems often
used in theatres. It has been shown that the laminar airflow in orthopaedic surgery theatres is greatly compromised when
warm air blanket systems are switched on. The downflow of sterile air from the ceiling mixes turbulently with dirtier air
rising from the warm air blanket on the operating table. This then has the significant potential to cause serious sites of
surgical infection (SSI) - the last thin the hospital or patient wants.
FLEXIBILITY
The Geratherm design using several individual heated blanket sections gives more flexibility in use than any other system
available. Up to four blankets can be used to maintain patient warming but only requires one multi-channel controller. The
blanket sections are used to cover any or all parts of the patient where the surgeon is not working. This allows maximum
heat transfer area and the best opportunity to achieve patient normothermy and eliminate intra operative hypothermia.
Uniquely all the heated sections are intelligent and talk to the controller via a single slim cable.
The required temperature for each blanket can be set individually.
The advanced UniqueTemp controller also has the facility to display patient core body
temperature using standard probes. A real time trace can be displayed at any time.
TOTAL PATIENT WARMING
There are two dedicated heated blanket systems that ensure optimum patient care:
Pre-Warming uses the full body blanket.
Intra-Operative Warming uses the multi-sectioned warming blankets.
Post Operative Warming again uses the full body blanket.
