Our Target
To manufacture and supply a top quality gel mattress that can easily be placed on any surface, able to reduce
and redistribute body weight and can be used in conjunction with actively heated warming blankets.

The GEL MAT 1 is a cohesive (non-leak) silicone gel mattress that is 5mm thick and made to be positioned
between the table mattress and the patient. The use of a thin actively warmed mattress under the gel mat will
aid this type of warming.

The 5mm gel thickness is able to provide the following performance:
1 - correct active warming of the patient - once rapidly warmed in a gel pad warming cabinet it provides ideal
heat distribution over the whole of the contact surface.
2 - effective body weight reduction and redistribution - able to tangibly reduce the risk of skin lesions due to the
patient’s impaired clinical condition.
3 - can be folded or rolled to form warm pads to aid patient positioning.

We define the GEL MAT thickness as ‘calibrated’ - we want to reach the best compromise between the need
to efficiently reduce and distribute body weight and the necessity to manage the patient’s core temperature by
providing effective warming. Several GEL MAT close together to cover the desired theatre table length. The
contact temperature of the warmed gel mats can be easily checked using crystal
indicators such as the Crystalline ST strips. These have an adhesive backing and
give a constant temperature indication. They can also be used on the fore head of
patients to give an indication of core temperature trends.

Gel Mattress for Patient Warming

Pressure-related skin damages frequently occur also in the operating
room. These problems can be avoided by using specific devices able
to reduce and distribute body weight pressure on the contact surface.
The correct choice of the specific device belongs to an attentive
preventive patient's clinical evaluation about his/her skin integrity and
general conditions. The main factors affecting skin integrity are :
● impaired overall clinical conditions
● vascular diseases
● diabetes related pathologies
● age
● body weight
● length of the surgical procedure

In the Operating Room
With some patients, because of their impaired clinical condition and/or during long term surgery, the use of
specific devices able to redistribute their body weight is needed. Quite often the operating theatre table
mattress is is not able to do this and this is why gel mattresses are frequently placed between the operating
table and the patient.
Statistically 50-80% of surgical patients develop hypothermia due to the effect of the anaesthetic drugs. It is
important to understand that a gel mattress at room temperature will take heat away from the patient until a
balance between gel and body is reached. This process brings additional body temperature reduction,
adversely affecting the patient’s core temperature. The thicker the gel mattress, the greater the adverse effect.

The body weight reduction and distribution performances of GEL-MAT 1 were carefully evaluated in presence
of different contact surfaces, simulating the situations generally present in the operating rooms (i.e.: quite rigid
mattresses / reasonably soft mattresses). It is important to know that gel mattresses performances are
affected by the kind of contact surface they are placed upon.
